Buying Yahoo Is A No-Brainer For Alibaba

Screen Shot 2011-09-30 at 6.29.53 PMToday at the China 2.0 conference at Stanford, Alibaba Groups's Jack Ma replied to a pointed question about buying Yahoo with, ?We are very interested in Yahoo. Our Alibaba group is important to Yahoo and Yahoo is important to us ? All the serious buyers interested in Yahoo have talked to us.? Those "serious buyers" most likely include Alibaba Group investor Silver Lake Partners, Microsoft and Andreesen Horowitz, who have all reportedly reached out to Yahoo's board.

Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive hands on: surprisingly cool, but still US-only

Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive
When Amazon Appstore for Android launched last week, one of its primary features -- Test Drive -- was disabled just a few minutes after it opened. With no try-before-you-buy, no refund process, and 1-Click purchasing ready to strike at any moment, this caused some problems. Anyway, don't despair: Test Drive is now enabled.

Before you get your hopes up, Test Drive doesn't work with every app. The IMDb app works fine -- you can even watch movie trailers on it! -- but the Angry Birds games are sadly not enabled. Some games work surprisingly well, though, like Bubble Buster. There's very little latency, and the framerate is really rather good. The Test Drive experience is so true to life that you even get ads; how cool is that?

Beautiful Retro Airia Desk Is Totally Modern

I use an old cast-iron sewing machine table with a marble slab thrown on top for my desk. It’s just like the ones you’ll find in cool little restaurants and bars, only with a giant Mac sat on top. If I was in the market (and had the money for) a proper desk, I’d be [...]

Pour one out for the Tevatron particle accelerator, because it's shutting down today

The eyes of the physics community are collectively fixed upon Illinois today, where, later this afternoon, researchers at Fermilab will shut down the Tevatron particle accelerator... for good. That's right -- the world's second-largest collider is being laid to rest, after a remarkable 25-year run that was recently halted due to budgetary constraints. Earlier this year, Fermilab's scientists and a group of prominent physicists pleaded with the government to keep the Tevatron running until 2014, but the Energy Department ultimately determined that the lab's $100 million price tag was too steep, effectively driving a nail through the accelerator's subterranean, four-mile-long coffin. First activated in 1985, the Tevatron scored a series of subatomic breakthroughs over the course of its lifespan, including, most notably, the discovery of the so-called top quark in 1995. Its groundbreaking technology, meanwhile, helped pave the way for CERN's Large Hadron Collider, which will now pursue the one jewel missing from the Tevatron's resume -- the Higgs boson. Many experts contend that the collider could've gone on to achieve much more, but its ride will nonetheless come to an inglorious end at 2PM today, when Fermilab director Pier Oddone oversees the Tevatron's last rites. "That will be it," physicist Gregorio Bernardi told the Washington Post. "Then we'll have a big party."

NASA Is Going to Harpoon an Asteroid. Unless They Lasso It. No Really. [Space]

We're going to put someone on an asteroid by 2025. Crazy. But the gravity on asteroids is so weak that we won't stick to it. NASA plans to harpoon an asteroid like a giant space-whale. Now that's my kinda crazy! More »

Long live the Samsung Taylor: prototype device to receive Mango?

Keep looking at Microsoft's "where's my Windows Phone update" page, concerned that Mango may never make it to your WP7 device? You may be comforted to hear that even the Samsung Taylor -- the beta device awarded to devs last summer that got left in the dark when NoDo came around -- is reportedly receiving the refresh to Windows Phone 7.5, inferring that the range of devices covered by the annual overhaul is pretty wide. It hasn't been made official, but the above screenshot was posted on the Facebook Wall of a Microsoft employee (which has since been taken down), offering a solid indication that the idea isn't too far-fetched. If you're one of the lucky few to have the prototype handset in your possession, be on the lookout and keep us apprised if Mango comes knocking on your door. Everyone else should feel at ease knowing that if the Taylor can get it, it's likely that every other Windows Phone can too.

C-Shaped Sponge Hugs Faucets, Drips Dry

I use a scouring sponge to wash the dishes and frankly it’s disgusting. After use, it sits on the countertop looking innocent as its damp innards fester with multiplying bacteria until the next time I use it and it contaminates every dish, spoon and cup it touches.
So my poor, soon-to-be-poisoned dinner guests have reason for [...]
